“When the Last Tree Falls” – Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo
Original artwork by Sophie Parkhill | SP Wildlife Art
“When the Last Tree Falls” is a striking pastel painting of the critically endangered Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo, created as my 2022 entry to Sketch for Survival with Explorers Against Extinction.
This rare and beautiful marsupial, which can be seen close by at Chester Zoo, has always captured my imagination and admiration. I took my own reference image there, watching them, often in quiet rest.
Painted in unsprayed soft pastel, this piece moves slightly away from my usual realism to lean into a more fantasy-like interpretation. The Tree Kangaroo is shown stepping forward from the darkness of extinction into a renewed realm of light and greenery, symbolising hope in the face of devastating habitat loss.
The ethereal background of soft bokeh greens and streams of light, highlights this sense of transition - a vision of rebirth beyond the last tree fall.
This one-of-a-kind painting is currently presented in a classic frame, ready to display as it is. For collectors who would like to enhance preservation and presentation, an enquiry form can be submitted to upgrade to professional framing with Anti-Reflective ARTGlass.
No limited edition prints will ever be made of this work — it is truly one of a kind.
